It just seems to me that popular music has gone as far as it can go and the ways in which it can be expressed are just about run out. The music business is as much to blame as anything else in the way it controls the choices of music that we have to listen to. It's a business and the common denominator is what sells. It always has. The last time I heard this song was in 1970. Listening to it now, it may as well have been yesterday. I agree about reverb. It was commonly used back then and really adds a distinctive quality to the recording. The arrangement of the whole song is quite unique with 4/4 time during Lee's part and going into a 3/4 waltz time for Nancy's part. The orchestral arrangent, together with the very subtle choral voices during Lee's part, really speaks of how music was created back then. Beautiful!

This is a tough call. Both versions are priceless. I do like the minor chording in the PPM version and of course their voices. On the other hand, GL has the 'cred' of being the author, and it seems personal. Any other covers of this song are far, far distant.

The truly great songs are open to interpretation by different artists. It often amuses me, the constant debates about who did what song best. In this case Gordon Lightfoot wrote a brilliant song which Peter Paul and Mary interpret brilliantly. I also like GL's own version of it. This is a great song whoever is singing it.

Back in '64 or '65, a callow high schooler, I found a True magazine, in the "adult" magazine section with a great facial shot of Mary. I bought it for the picture which I carried with me for a while. Guess that was about 200 pounds since her good old days.

actually i believe it was to split up and do concerts at small towns. splitting them up allowed them to do more concerts and therefore get to the small towns where people usually wouldnt have gotten a chance to see them perform! at least thats what i heard

it depends what you're in to as post-rock is a very broad genre. It's like saying youre asking for what albums to get for jazz. If you liked the spiderland CD then Codeine's White Birch is very good too. Mogwai has a loose and depressing sound. Sigur ros is more inspiring-sounding. Pelican has the same kind of time-signature-weirdness as slint but is heavier. Oceansize has a generic rock mood, but has a LOT of skippy time changes and is one of the only post-rock bands with vocals.
