This is pre-decency code of 1934. Censorship at it's finest. This is great. The opening song is Redman's conposition "Chant of the Weed" (not your garden variety either) ;-). Redman later became Pearl Bailey's musical director. He was called the "Little Giant" of the Big Band. He could make a 9 piece band sound like 18. How? Redman wrote his arrangements in Keys like Db (5 flats),C# (6 sharps), B (5 sharps) because of the overtone series in those keys which made ensembles "sound" bigger.

The year is 1933. The animation is hand drawn. The result is far more impressive, more imaginative, far FUNNIER and far hipper than anything coming out of the CGI studios in the year 2008. Compare this to "Ratatouille" and tell me which one you'd rather watch with your kids. Nothing against "Ratatouille" which is probably the best of the modern crop, but the Fleischer Studios just blows Dreamworks away. What a sad commentary on the current state of American animation.

The nice thing about this cartoon is besides the band's excellent performance is the male vocals on "How'm I Doin'" and "I Heard" are by Don Redman himself. Note also, the saucy precensorship bit where Betty's dress is blown off and she is momentarily in her undies. Pretty saucy stuff for back then. All lotsa fun after all these years!

Don Redman was one of THE most important arrangers in early jazz. The opening tune shows, he wrote using some very modern harmonies for the time. An important member & arranger for the great McKinney's Cotton Pickers, an early big band - He also arranged for Louis Armstrong,Fletcher Henderson & just about everyone. Dr Billy Taylor was with Redman's band in the early 50's. Billy said Don would sit down and write a FLAWLESS arrangement for a 16 piece band like you and I would write a postcard.

I don't think this cartoon was banned. Actually, the library of the US Congress has selected this film for preservation, and deemed as "culturally significant". Betty Boop did attract the aim of many watchdog groups that considered the very short skirted cartoon as 'immoral', and forced Fleisher bros. to be more polite and less irreverent in further years. It's a memory from a time when cartoons weren't ONLY for kids.

Obviously the show was banned for the song. The song is blues and blues are not meant for children (adult situations). But Cab Calloway can blow! That was a brilliant scene. Its a shame that there is no real cause to air this cartoon more often, obviously more because of the potential outcry and its age, because it is actually technically a landmark in animated live action stop photography. probaly because, 1. its the scariest thing i've ever seen. 2. it has heaps and heaps of violence? i use to watch this when i was a kid. i remember watching this, it wasn't scary then though. i also remember this one, and they were all eating, and this guy kept getting messy, so there was windscreen wipers to clean him.
