Betty Boop/Louis Armstrong - You Rascal You (1932) Posted by: WhenSwingWasKing
Video duration: 429 seconds One of the classic Depression-era musical cartoons created by Max and Dave Fleischer. Satchmo's soundtrack obviously inspires the artists - even if the visuals aren't in any way "politically correct" 70-plus years later. Frank Sinatra - Stardust (1943) Posted by: WhenSwingWasKing
Video duration: 200 seconds With some minor alterations, this is essentially the same arrangement of "Stardust" that Sinatra recorded with the Tommy Dorsey band in 1941. Here, Frank is accompanied by his cohorts from "Your Hit Parade," including conductor Mark Warnow. This public domain footage comes from the "Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco" promotional film (full movie available at www.archive.org). Benny Goodman - Medley (1937) Posted by: WhenSwingWasKing
Video duration: 127 seconds Filmed during "Hollywood Hotel," this unusual medley combines the mighty Goodman band of 1937 ("I've Got a Heartful of Music" and "House Hop") with the BG Quartet ("Avalon"). The young Harry James takes solos on "Heartful" and "Hop," while Rudy Vallee serves as the on-camera emcee. Benny Goodman and Red Norvo (1960) Posted by: WhenSwingWasKing
Video duration: 216 seconds The camera catches the jumping 10-piece group Goodman led from 1959-1961 (built around the Red Norvo Quintet), but in this clip, the spotlight stays firmly on Benny and Red. "The World is Waiting For the Sunrise" was an early Goodman showcase in 1934, and was memorably re-recorded by BG with Mel Powell in 1942 (for Commodore). Benny was still playing this number brilliantly in the 1980s! Bing Crosby - Where the Blue of the Night (1933) Posted by: WhenSwingWasKing
Video duration: 266 seconds The final 4:30 of this Sennett short, titled after Bing's famous radio theme. Franklin Pangborn is the hapless suitor spurned by Babe Kane in this "mistaken identity" saga. Crosby would keep the in-joke about Jack Smith (one of his replacements with Paul Whiteman and a lightweight rival in the 1930s singstakes) alive on his radio shows well into the '50s! Paul Whiteman - King of Jazz trailer (1930) Posted by: WhenSwingWasKing
Video duration: 223 seconds In all its 2-strip Technicolor glory, here's the original trailer for the mega-musical that captured Paul Whiteman's finest band for posterity (although Universal's inability to get its act together resulted in the lost opportunity to film the full Whiteman troupe with Bix Beiderbecke still on board). Artie Shaw - Shoot the Likker To Me John Boy (1939) Posted by: WhenSwingWasKing
Video duration: 248 seconds From "Artie Shaw's Class in Swing," it's the powerhouse Shaw unit of 1939 - propelled by the 21-year old Buddy Rich on drums. Tune your ears past the dated voiceover and enjoy one of the landmark big bands of the entire Swing Era! Bing Crosby - Auf Wiedersehen, My Dear (1933) Posted by: WhenSwingWasKing
Video duration: 173 seconds The opening sequences from Crosby's final Mack Sennett short, with two songs Bing never recorded for Brunswick or Decca - "Auf Wiedersehen" and (under the opening credits) a truncated version of "My Silent Love." Look carefully and you'll spot Bing's loyal friend, guitar virtuoso Eddie Lang, in the on-camera band. So Louis is a symbol for the angry bush-people-who-all-look-a-like-and-want-to-kill-the-white-folks?! Guess it makes sense in a minstrel kind of way.. What a horrible history lies behind us. At least i heard louis :) (thanks for the video though!)

Thanks, I have no idea what it has to do with speed either -- but it's interesting and, I think, hilarious.

The letters are Kaf, Shin, and Resh. When you put them together they form the Hebrew word Kosher. I have no idea what that has to do with speed. :)

I don't know, but that's when she was greatly changed by the Hollywood censers! I'd suspect that she wasn't thought of as old fashioned in 1935, because they changed her image by then, and the cartoon continued for another four years! Personally, I think that the best Betty cartoons are from the early thirties!
By: DickStainy. on 15 Jun 08, 05:57:52
Was Betty Boop considered "retro" or "1920s" - by 1935 standards? People weren't saying Boo-boop-be-do any more in 1935, were they?
By: cha5. on 26 May 08, 04:57:16
God I wish I could delete that last comment of mine, It's really insulting towards Jazz, The Blues, And Gospel Music and does nothing but pigeonhole and belittle their heritage and history.
By: cha5. on 25 May 08, 19:18:21
One thing to remember is that early Jazz and The Blues were the complete opposite of say Gospel music in their themes.

Well if you look through one of the essential collections of Satchmos earliest work 'Louis Armstrong Hot Fives And Hot Sevens' you can find some examples such as 'Georgia Grind' 'He Likes It Slow' and quite a few other songs that would never be what you would call PC these days, If you really wanted something raunchy there was a lyric I found on a 78 about 20 years ago called 'My Girl's Pussy' I don't remember who the musician was but it was about a girls cat and you can guess the rest.
By: yoclaudiuyoclaudiu. on 24 May 08, 20:07:44
can you give me some examples...'cause i'm interested in:)...tanks;)

I considered uploading this one, but you had already done it. Thank you.
By: cha5. on 12 Apr 08, 03:44:24
The sexual overtones in that bit are pretty easy to see, Quite a few of some of the early Jazz and Blues songs from the twenties and early thirties had lyrics like that.

Cannibalism... voodoo... it ain't exactly subtle.
By: cha5. on 17 Mar 08, 01:50:23
Yeah alot of the early pre Hays Code Fleischer cartoons (1930-1933) could really be nightmarishly surrealistic.
