Shirley Bassey: Makin' Whoopee Posted by: jeffers1961
Video duration: 293 seconds Global video hits: 1937 Makin' Whoopee was one of the first songs ever performed in the movies. It was written in 1928 for the stage production of "Whoopee", then recorded in 1930 for the movie, starring Eddie Cantor. It was written by Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn. Shirley's version is delightfully whimsical, and also very sensual. I like the restrained performance here. Eddie was a real pro who was never happy unless his audience was royally entertained. If you want to be in show biz these are the guys to check out.

great stuff. i love the bit a 2:15 where he changes from the candle stick phone to the hand set reciever type, very topical at the time it was made i expect and would have been a great touch to audiences of the day.

Goldman DID NOT work closely with the Cantor family--just me, Janet Cantor Gari. He called constantly, not for information about my father, just to rant about his own family and how he "wished he had killed his father when he was a teenager!" He later admitted privately that if he didn't have a source, he'd invent one! As for his several innuendos that Jolson might have been bisexual, I had to explain to this grown man that a misogynist is not gay. The Fanny Brice book was a total flop.
By: voglesque89. on 30 Sep 08, 04:51:12
actually, one of their "minions" was just a fellow youtuber. Either that, or I've been playing a year-long game of "who would you do" with a member of the Cantor family. And the criticism was of apparent contradiction in his writing style every other page.
By: LazlosPlane. on 29 Sep 08, 16:53:58
Further to above, Mr. Goldman's Cantor book won the ASCAP Award for "Best Biography of the Year," no small honor. It's too bad what happened with the Cantor family. The book is an extremely valuable document of Cantor's life and career.
By: LazlosPlane. on 29 Sep 08, 14:53:07
As something of a scholar myself (music history) I can tell you with certainty the "Banjo Eyes" is about as good, authoratative, accurate, and unbiased biogaphy as you can find. Interestingly, Eddie's "dalliances" are only mentioned in passing, and have very little weight compared with the gravity and profoundity of the man's benevolence, and talent. The Cantors just refuse to accept it. Pitifully sad, really. The book does enormous justice to Mr. Cantor.
By: LazlosPlane. on 29 Sep 08, 14:50:20
Yes, you probably heard that from a member of the Cantor family or one of their minions who have been spreading the word that the bio is worthless. Sadly, Herb Goldman worked very closely with the family on this book, and when it came to discuss Eddie's "dalliances" with the opposite sex, they were adamantly against it, and cut-off themselves off from Mr. Goldman. Judging by his other works (ie, Jolson bio, Fanny Brice bio) Mr. Goldman was not to be bullied into playing with the truth.
By: voglesque89. on 29 Sep 08, 14:45:36
Actually, I've always heard that that biography is really awful...
By: LazlosPlane. on 29 Sep 08, 07:40:35
May I also strongly recommend, for those interested in Cantor, his life and career, a first-class bio "Banjo Eyes," by Herbert G. Goldman. You'll find that Cantor was more, much more than a great entertainer. In fact, he may have been one of the great men of the twentieth century. Really.

Thanks for this - he's such a great performer! I laughed out loud when he made the sudden change to the 'phone' gesture. It's incredible that we're still able to see a film that includes a (at the time)topical joke about the change from candlestick-style telephones. Even more incredible that it's still funny! A credit to him.

Ole "Banjo Eyes" at his best. Even the color is good for the time........5 Stars

I love Eddie Cantor, and all the grand ol' entertainers of the pre-WWII era. In those days, talents were in direct competition with one another, so they had to work that much harder to make end's meet. They trained in every form of entertainment they knew, that's why so many of them were comedians/singers/dancers/actors, and they were usually adept at each of those roles. Just look at the grace and animation in Cantor's performance, what a showman!

One of the great American standard lyrics, delivered superbly by Cantor in 1930. Notice how he tips his hat to the ladies as they exit, then casually performs a pretty nifty dance step to open the second chorus...good stuff.

I know this vid was made a long time a go but the message and words that eddy Cantor sang about here are AGELESS! The facts are quite acurate and probably will continue to be so ovewr the ages to come! I bet the divorce lawyers LOVE this song b'cuz for them it means PAY DAY! ^_-
By: scotpens. on 08 Jul 08, 02:53:33
The first feature-length film in full Technicolor was "Becky Sharp" in 1935, but there were earlier 3-strip Technicolor shorts. 1934's "La Cucaracha" is often listed as the first live-action film in full Technicolor, although a couple of other one- and two-reelers have claimed that honor. In any case, the first full-Technicolor film to be exhibited commercially was the Disney cartoon "Flowers and Trees" in 1933.
By: scotpens. on 08 Jul 08, 02:47:49
That's a fact worth pointing out, especially when some of the overly "PC" crowd criticize Cantor and other performers of the era for appearing in blackface -- which was just a show-business convention of the times.
