I'm not sure where you're coming from, but I spent my childhood on Makua beach, and my grandfather lived there. The government removed him and many others from that area in the mid 1990's, threatening to bulldoze their tents if they didn't leave. This government is so concerned about Hawaiians living on the beach, but they don't bat their eyes with the military's complete desecration and bombing of Makua Valley; another place from which Hawaiians were evicted over 50 years ago.

Well, Hawaii isn't gaining independence anytime soon, especially since it holds great geopolitical/strategic importance for the USA. Without Hawaii and all its army bases, the US would have a harder time getting into E. Asia. I highly doubt those people on the beach want to give up their culture and bow down to what they see as colonialist institutions. Well I think Obama was really smart for going to Hawaii. Not only did everyone see him enjoying the natural habitat of this beautiful place, but I bet it also gave him a good lift for dealing with the problems ahead of him concerning mainly the economy. I think that a trip to Hawaii was the first thing he needed, in order to continue into the transition to the White House. Then the Republican Party limited wanted to limit it to full blooded "aborigine Hawaiians" then Kuhio argued for 1/32 blood. So one-half Hawaiian was the compromise. Realbrave's right actually, he did play in a sub[ar conference, but you still can't deny his consistency throughout his 3 years, setting records and such. You could say the Sugar Bowl was a test to play against a real good team, unfortunately he didn't step up to the challenge.
