Actually, I don't think it's really defeats the purpose at all. In fact, it shows it well. Jude is a sort of apathetic, down to earth character in this movie and he's trying to show his girl that this isn't going to get them anywhere; that they're far too idealistic and going about it the wrong way.

Yeah, I honestly could care less about the SUV's (gas eaters!). But thousands of people do work for GM and Ford. Those idiots that run GM and Ford saw this coming years ago, but did nothing to prevent it from happening. I want to believe that they deserved this, but man I feel for all those people that have been working for those Car Plants for most of their lives. I think that we already can call ourseves Type I civilization. exmpl. HAARP controls ionospheric processes that might alter the performance of communication and surveillance systems. Not really. The root cause of the current problem is that people want what they don't deserve: borrowed lifestyles. To get it they make promises they can't keep: debt repayment. And we all want it so we're all stupid enough to believe it will work. It never does, because we always take it way too far. "Capitalism" would work great if it was about capital saved through work. It doesn't work if it just turns into debtism that can only grow through borrowing from an uncertain future.
