i love this ep. i first saw speed racer in Jan-'81 on our local UHF station in Memphis WPTY channel 24. i was 12(going on 13). the series ran off and on here until 82 then disappeared. MTV renewed it and it used to come on at midnight throughout the early 90's. i'm glad its on YT. brings back so many memories!

@Rezindez You're right. "Speed Racer isn't bad'. It's terrific. Since you're only 15, you may not understand the nostalgia of seeing something that you grew up watching about 40 years ago. So, the fact that you call this cartoon "less than average" and "really, really stupid" tells me that you don't see the genuine quality of the original show. If you think it's "less than average" and "really, really stupid", I encourage you to not watch it. There's plenty of us that appreciate the original.

@Beautifulmusiclistnr No, it's a separate anime. Watch it on animeseason or animefreak or something. Speed Racer isn't "bad" in the truest sense so much as it is over the top silly, but Death Note will make Speed Racer look like what it is: for anime, it's less than average.

Such a great cartoon! I watched it when I was a little boy, and I had a couple of Mach 5 Hot Wheels cars, and I still have them. It would be great to have a life sized Mach 5 though. It's funny to watch it as an adult with Speed jumping from motor cycle to motor cycle like a flying squirrel. lol Ah yes, the infamous Duggery! @TreadwellJay the opening at the top is the original one. When they remastered in around 1990 and for MTV, they used a clean open and close with updated graphics. Clean versions are common in Japanese anime - these don't have the graphics on them.

I remember this show very well. It was shown widely on independent TV stations in the early 1970s, and it was wildly popular with kids. Some teens even watched it for the artwork, which was great, even if the animation was crude. Watching it again, I spot Japanese touches, I hadn't noticed, like settings of bombed out factories, a relic of WWII. I am very glad to see it again.

Okay. Most anime that has freaky parts like this don't phase me anymore, but I gotta admit. Michi/Trixie has PROBLEMS. I mean, its really clear to me. When I listen to music lately searching for songs that make me think of Speed and Trixie, they're usually songs like "I love him, but he doesn't seem to show the same feelings.". I feel so sorry for her... Yet they're my favorite couple in the anime. :(

I used to come home from school and watch this (channel 56, Boston). I hated the theme and then as a teenager I realized it was a haiku (check the first verse). I never missed this cartoon back then (late '60s - early '70s). They also showed Kimba as a lead-in (same animation studio, same character voices). And for those who hated the live action movie version of this (as I do) - Yogi Bear will be out for Xmas and that should be REALLY awful!

Pops was an ex-boxer,prize fighter or wrestler if I remember the story correctly, before becoming a mechanic. He was always apposed to his sons becoming a racer. That was part of the show story Speed had to race in secret. But, I always love Racer X he was the coolest character and loved the shows he was in cause I knew there would be great action. I couldn't agree with you more, but i think that if they were going to make the movie right...don't do it in real time. Either give it back the original look the cartoon had, for the film, or use computer animation, but doing what they did with this film i think just ruined it! And I'm a huge speed racer fan! :S

I totally loved the 1st Race. Speed haunted by the ghost of his older brother Rex. Awesome the way all the early scenes were tied to that 1st race,the most emotional race of the movie in my opinion.Yeah,the movie was mostly geared to kids from maybe 6-13,but the first 40 min. or so(mostly everything surrounding the 1st race),worked perfectly for adults.If that race didnt get you choked up,then its pretty much guranteed that you wasted your money & that this movie is not your cup of tea.

I'm sorry to all the SR fans, I'm sure the show was cool-but I just came from the film and when people continually WALK OUT DURING A MOVIE, you know it's in trouble. I have never heard that exit door slam so many times in my life. It unfortunaely flip-floped between trying to be a SPY KIDS/LAVA GIRL movie and a 'grown up' film for those who remember the show. Between the confusing hostile take over-one tree-hill-monologues. The kids were restless and the adults well--it was No Speed Racer NO!
